From photograph to carved relief
A bas-relief compresses a subject into a shallow surface, so the goal is readable form rather than full sculptural depth. A portrait with a clear silhouette and even lighting is usually easier to interpret than a small, shadow-heavy face. Crop for the finished panel and leave room around the subject for any border you plan to create later.
Review shape, not just likeness
Check whether the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin separate in the preview. Hair, clothing, and background can merge when their tones or edges are similar. The generator estimates depth from a single image; it cannot recover hidden sides of an object or guarantee anatomically exact geometry. If a key feature is lost, use a clearer photo or change the crop before trying to correct it in CAM.
Plan the material and finishing
Before exporting, decide the physical panel size and how much relief height the material can support. Fine details may need a larger finished size or a smaller finishing cutter to remain visible. Verify the mesh or height map in your CAM preview, set a safe machining strategy for your own machine, and simulate the toolpath before cutting.
